The first boutique hotel of the many hotel offerings in the surrounding area of the busy Chicago O’Hare airport. The initiative of The Rose Hotel, a 165-room new build property was to appeal to your hip, trend-seeking visitor and to convey to the guest a feeling of “where classy meets edgy”. The specifier was inspired by photos of the colorful, floating umbrella art installation at the famous Ágitagueda art festival in Portugal.
Initially the project conceptualization meeting and first budgetary quote was presented to the client by another LightArt project manager, who had left the company prior to my hire. So after a bit of detective work and further conversations with the sales rep and specifier, I was able to piece together the constraints and design intent desired for the project.
The umbrella fixtures are unlike any custom sculptural light fixture LightArt had created before, which posed a combination of unique challenges and opportunities for me and my team - from learning how to motivate my teammates to collaboratively bring these lights to reality as an interactive, one-of-a-kind, installation of light fixtures, to working with outside vendors and managing client expectations and relations.
