Luxhedron is a holographic, light sculpture that was first conceived through paper play in folding geometric solids, specifically in investigating the love I have for the dodecahedron. My creative friend, Crew Potter, and I had worked together on creating lighting for the Fulton Market Loft Party (see project details in portfolio section). Following that experience, I dreamed of exhibiting the Luxhedron with solar lights in an outdoor environment that could be enjoyed by the public. I began researching and figuring out what products I needed and how to submit to local art councils and network with those on the committee to better increase the odds of participating and realizing my vision.
I created a variety of proposals to gain acceptance to exhibit in the shows listed below. To go along with the installations, I created graphic "take away" materials and Crew Potter created business cards for us, for potential future exhibit opportunities. I was very proud when I received the book Luxhedron was published in from the "Unfolded" exhibit it Chicago, where we showcased the white paper model, silver paper model, and then the final mirrored holographic model in a tiered layout (see images in the gallery below).
In order to figure out the pricing for these types of pieces, I gathered all of the material costs, I timed each part of the building process and what each size (small, medium, and large) Luxhedron would cost. When I ran into the issue that I could no longer source anymore of the mirrored holographic material - I began researching other material vendors, sending them samples of scraps I had left and getting small samples from some vendors in return. The end result was cost prohibitive and a move to the other side of the country meant the Luxhedron building team was separated and the pieces were divided between us, to remain one-of-a-kind pieces of art - until a new shared idea comes along in the future.
